January 9, 2023, Nature Center Scenic Trail

The short trail leads from the Nature Center to Boneyard Beach and connects to the Lagoon Trail. There are chic views between the trees on the water.

In contrast to the Lagoon Trail, which runs parallel, it is almost dead straight here. The views of the dense forest are fantastic on both sides.

The Nature Center is a good location to start a hiking tour. It provides sufficient parking lots and you can also get your State Park admission here. The center offers paper maps, infomation and a collection of turtles, snakes and alligators. https://www.friendsofhuntingisland.org/nature

Hurricanes Matthew and Irma in 2016/2017 caused this part of the coast to split from Hunting Island, creating an own little island called Litte Hunting Island. The area is under constant change. The dead or dying trees in the saltwater, also known as Boneyard Beach, provide a filming set-like scenery. A great photo spot and quite lonely, too! An impressive video of a walk through the area can be found here (sufficient to view the first couple of minutes): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dChRnUHxjxE

The pier spanning from the Nature Center into the channel between Hunting Island and Fripp Island is mainly for fishing which is quite popular (https://www.friendsofhuntingisland.org/fishing). For hikers, the pier offers a great view on the southern entrance of the saltwater lagoon and Little Hunting Island. After the 2016 visit from Hurricane Matthew wreaked havoc on the Nature Center Pier, it took 4 1/2 years to extensively rehabiliate the pier - the refurbished version reopened on September 18, 2021.

Walk along the saltwater lagoon in north-south direction between the Nature Center Scenic Trail and the picnic area/parking area (point J). It's a great trail that winds through the virgin palm forest in countless little curves, revealing beautiful views of the saltwater lagoon again and again. Also enjoy the background sound mix of bird chirping and seawater rushing of the ocean behind the lagoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the hiking trails on Fripp Island open to the public?

Fripp Island is a private community, so access to trails on the island itself, like the Audubon Trail, is generally restricted to residents and guests. However, the majority of popular hiking routes in the area are located in the nearby and publicly accessible Hunting Island State Park, which is a very short drive from Fripp Island.

What are some good, easy hikes for families near Fripp Island?

The area is great for family outings due to its flat terrain. A fantastic option is the Lagoon Trail – Beach With Signs Of Erosion loop from Hunting Island. It's a relatively short walk that combines shaded forest paths with time along the shoreline, making it engaging for all ages.

Can I bring my dog on the hiking trails?

Dogs are welcome in many of the outdoor spaces, but rules vary. In Hunting Island State Park, where most of the main hiking trails are, dogs are allowed on the trails and most beach areas as long as they are on a leash no longer than six feet. However, they are not permitted on the pier or inside the lighthouse. Always check specific park regulations before you go.

What kind of wildlife can I expect to see while hiking?

The region is a designated wildlife sanctuary, so you have a great chance of seeing various animals. On the trails, especially in the maritime forests of Hunting Island, look for white-tailed deer and numerous bird species. The salt marshes are home to egrets and herons. In and around the lagoons, it's common to spot alligators, so always maintain a safe distance and be aware of your surroundings.

Are there any circular walks available?

Yes, most of the established trails in the area are designed as loops, making them convenient for hikers. For a comprehensive circular route, consider the Lagoon Trail – Nature Center Scenic Trail loop from Hunting Island State Park. This trail provides a great tour of the park's maritime forest and brings you near the nature center.

How do the trails on Fripp Island compare to those on Hunting Island?

Fripp Island itself offers more casual walking and biking on paved paths and short nature trails like the Audubon Trail. For more extensive and traditional hiking, Hunting Island State Park is the primary destination. It features a larger network of trails through dense maritime forest and along undeveloped coastline, offering a more immersive nature experience.

Is there a trail that leads to Boneyard Beach?

Yes, you can hike to the stunning Little Hunting Island Boneyard Beach. There is a scenic path that leads from the parking area through coastal vegetation to the beach, which is famous for the weathered trees scattered across the sand. It's a unique and highly photographed spot.

Can I hike to the historic lighthouse on Hunting Island?

While the main hiking trails wind through the forest and along the lagoon, the historic Hunting Island Lighthouse is easily accessible within the park. You can walk to the base of the lighthouse from the main beach parking area. For a fee, you can also climb the stairs to the top for panoramic views of the coastline.

Where can I find a longer, paved trail for walking or biking?

For a longer, well-maintained path, the Spanish Moss Trail is an excellent choice. Located a short drive away in Beaufort County, this popular 'rails-to-trails' path stretches for 10 miles. It's a paved, flat trail that winds through beautiful marshland, making it perfect for an extended walk, run, or bike ride.
