It’s known as a “composite lock,” featuring heavy wooden sides held in place by massive stone anchor blocks. You can clearly see the large, hewn blocks of limestone that formed the lock chamber walls.

This Civil War Monument has stood in the very heart of the village since 1877. Capped with a marble statue of a Civil War soldier, it is a powerful, historic centerpiece. In the 1880s, four decommissioned Civil War cannons were added to the corners of the base.

I’d do this trail again. Absolutely perfect with many stopping opportunities to check out the surroundings. I decided to continue into the Attica-Erie trail to extend the ride

Near the junction is a gorgeous old truss bridge over the Genesee that makes for a great biking destination. Here the Lehigh Valley Trail intersects with the Genesee Greenway. Both are easy, flat, fine crushed gravel paths with shaded scenic views.
