May 14, 2025, Agia Sofia Byzantine Church

It is the oldest surviving building in Drama and is located in the immediate vicinity of the Byzantine city walls. The church was built in the 10th century and is currently (May 2025) being restored. During the Ottoman occupation, it was converted into a mosque called the "Bey Mosque." To meet its new needs as a mosque, a spacious vestibule was added to the west side of the building, raised two meters above the level of the old church. The excavated space on the north side of the church was a Turkish cemetery, while the present bell tower was the base of the minaret.

Built in 1920 to replace the chapel of the same name that stood in the lake in front of the church today. According to tradition, the chapel was destroyed with the Ottoman conquest of the city in the 14th century to make way for a mosque. However, on the feast of Saint Barbara, the area flooded, creating a lake that covered the construction site. Thus, Saint Barbara was declared the patron saint of Drama, and years later, after the Ottomans withdrew, this new church dedicated to the saint was built.

Built in 1920 to replace the chapel of the same name that stood on the site of the present lake. According to tradition, the chapel of Agia Varvara was destroyed by the Ottomans during their conquest of Drama in the 14th century so that an Ottoman mosque could be built in its place. However, their plans changed on the day of Saint Barbara, when the area was flooded and a lake appeared, covering the construction site. Thus, Saint Barbara was declared the patron saint of Drama, and this church was built.

After crossing the Trigrad Gorge, the sights are far from over. South of Trigrad a beautiful valley leads to the southwest. The road is easy to drive to the south of Kesten (keep right before Kesten). The footpath through the forest to the border ridge is pleasant to walk. After reaching the border, there is an amazing view to the south into the Greek part of the Rhodope Mountains.
