The trail can be taken in both directions. However clockwise it seems to be easier. The route has amazing rock shelves for climbing and descending.

A great spot to learn all about the national park. There are also public toilets so it's a good mid-ride stopping point.

Government Canyon is a large hiking area around San Antonio and Austin. Several different trails lead into the canyon and the rocky and dry landscapes. Hike the Recharge Trail for a nice stroll or go on a longer hike on the Wildcat Trail with some old ranch buildings with a pole barn, corral, stock tank and windmill. If you feel adventurous you can hike a whole day along the Joe Johnston Route to a fantastic Canyon overlook and even some dinosaur tracks. For a real backcountry adventure, hike The Outer Loop which is rough, rugged and rewarding. It includes sections of the Joe Johnston Route, the Recharge Trail, Far Reaches Trail, Sendero Balcones Trail and Caroline's Loop. Always take enough water and snacks.
