The last kilometer is tough, so sturdy footwear is a must. In windy weather, you should be careful on the descent, as the wind will occasionally catch you.

This hike should be done in sunny weather with little wind. If trade wind clouds obscure the summit, you won't see anything.

A lovely walk. Nice, high mountain, great for beginners as it is an easy slope all the way up ! Just stay within the fences and signage indicating steep cliffs. Fabulous views to Cofete. I will do the coast path on that side one day....

A strenuous trail, especially the final stretch is very steep. Not for beginners, but worth the effort!

Again and again, impressive views open up over the barrancos (ravines) and down to the coast.

Shortly before the summit you pass an arela that is fenced in to protect the vegetation from the goats. It's amazing how much greenery you find here!

For those seeking a challenge, the View from Pico de la Zarza – Pico de la Zarza summit loop from Morro Jable Lighthouse is a difficult 15.9 km route ascending to the highest point on Fuerteventura, Pico de la Zarza, offering expansive views. Another demanding option is the Monte Aguda loop from 5, a difficult 15.5 km trail with significant elevation gain.
Many routes offer stunning views. The summit of Pico de la Zarza provides unrivalled panoramic views of the entire park and the Atlantic Ocean, including Cofete Beach. You can also explore Monte Aguda for diverse perspectives of the volcanic terrain. The Jandía Lighthouse at the southern tip also offers spectacular ocean vistas.
Yes, several mountaineering routes in Jandía are circular. Examples include the Pico de la Zarza summit loop from Morro Jable Lighthouse, the Monte Aguda loop from La Reses, and the Monte Aguda loop from Esquinzo. These loops allow you to experience varied landscapes without retracing your steps.

Fuerteventura generally enjoys a mild climate year-round, making mountaineering possible in most seasons. However, the cooler months from autumn to spring (October to May) are often preferred to avoid the intense summer heat, especially for longer or more strenuous routes. Always check local weather forecasts before heading out.
Jandía's volcanic origin has created distinctive features. Keep an eye out for the dark volcanic heights, sharp mountains, ridges, and deep ravines (barrancos) that define the Jandía Massif. The 'prisoners' way,' an historic trail, crosses vast volcanic terrain leading to impressive white dune deserts formed by erosion, offering a unique trekking experience.
While some routes are challenging, there are easier options that families with older children and good fitness levels might enjoy. The Monte Aguda loop from La Reses is a shorter, easier trail that could be suitable for a family outing, offering a taste of the volcanic landscape without extreme difficulty.
Public transport options to specific trailheads within the Jandía Natural Park can be limited. While there are bus services to towns like Morro Jable, reaching more remote starting points for mountaineering routes often requires a car or taxi. It's advisable to research specific route access points and plan your transport accordingly.
The Jandía Natural Park is a protected area. While general hiking on established trails typically doesn't require individual permits, it's always recommended to respect park regulations. For specific activities or off-trail exploration, it's best to check with local authorities or the park's visitor center for any updated requirements.
Given the volcanic terrain and potential for sun exposure, it's essential to wear sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing suitable for varying temperatures, and sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen). Always carry sufficient water, snacks, a map or GPS device, and a fully charged phone. The weather can change, so a light windbreaker or rain jacket is also recommended.
