The arrival from Almadén de la Plata is straightforward and follows a straightforward track until you reach the Chorro trail. Once you reach the bed of the Las Calzadillas stream, the truly interesting part begins. From the clearly marked trail, you access the stream bed to see the rock embedded in the gorge formed by the stream. Then, there are steep climbs with spectacular views until you reach the return path. Very interesting and highly recommended.

The Rivera del Huéznar is one of the three great rivers of the Sierra Morena Seville, along with the Viar and the Retortillo. Although its course is short, only 60 km, its route is winding and presents marked unevenness. Throughout its course, this river is bordered by a very well-developed gallery forest, which is home to a diversity of plant and animal species. Among the birds that take refuge and nest in the trees that line the river are the kingfisher, the dipper and the nightingale. In addition, the otter, which only lives in rivers with protected banks and clean waters, also lives in this area. A beautiful place to explore! 😊

The National Park Sierra Norte de Sevilla features several dedicated waterfall hiking trails. Our guide highlights three distinct routes that lead to impressive waterfalls, offering a range of experiences from moderate to challenging.
While many waterfall trails in the region involve moderate to difficult terrain, the area around the Cascadas de Huéznar offers sections that can be enjoyed by families. For a generally easier experience in the park, consider parts of the Sierra Norte de Sevilla Greenway, which follows an old railway line and passes near the Huéznar River waterfalls, though it's primarily a cycling route.
The best time to visit the waterfalls is typically during the cooler, wetter months, from late autumn through spring (November to May). After periods of rain, the waterfalls, especially the Cascadas de Huéznar and El Chorro Waterfall, are at their most impressive with higher water flow. Summers can be very hot and dry, leading to reduced water levels.
Many trails within the National Park Sierra Norte de Sevilla are dog-friendly, but it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash to protect local wildlife and ensure their safety, especially near steep or rocky sections. Always check specific trail regulations before heading out.
Yes, there are excellent circular routes that allow you to experience the region's waterfalls. For instance, the Cerro del Calvario and El Chorro Waterfall Loop is a moderate 16.8 km circular trail that takes you to El Chorro Waterfall. Another option is the challenging Huéznar Waterfalls – Roman bridge loop from San Nicolás del Puerto, which explores the Río Huéznar and its unique formations.
The riverine landscapes around the waterfalls are rich in wildlife. You might spot otters in the rivers, and various bird species, including colorful azure-winged magpies and bee-eaters. The park is also known for its impressive birds of prey, such as Griffon vultures and various eagle species, which can often be seen soaring overhead. Keep an eye out for red deer and wild boar in the surrounding forests.
While the Cascadas de Huéznar are a popular natural monument, visiting during weekdays or off-peak seasons can offer a more tranquil experience. Exploring some of the longer, more challenging routes like the Huéznar Waterfalls loop from Los Prados might lead you to quieter sections of the park, allowing for a more secluded encounter with nature.
Beyond the waterfalls, the park offers diverse attractions. You can visit the unique karst landscape of Cerro del Hierro Viewpoint, explore charming white villages like Cazalla de la Sierra or Constantina with their historical castles, or discover the Lagoon in the dehesa. The San Nicolás del Puerto Beach (a river beach) is also a popular spot for relaxation.
Given the varied terrain, sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential. Layers of clothing are advisable, as temperatures can change, especially near water. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a waterproof jacket, particularly during the wetter seasons. A map or GPS device is also recommended for navigation.
Public transport options to the more remote trailheads within the National Park Sierra Norte de Sevilla can be limited. It is generally easier to access the trails by car. However, some towns like Cazalla de la Sierra and Constantina have bus connections, and from there, you might find local services or taxis to reach specific starting points. Planning your journey in advance is highly recommended.
The waterfall trails in National Park Sierra Norte de Sevilla are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.2 stars. Reviewers often praise the stunning natural beauty of the Cascadas de Huéznar and El Chorro Waterfall, the tranquility of the riverine landscapes, and the opportunity to immerse oneself in the park's rich biodiversity and unique geological formations.
