Knockmany passage tomb, or Anya's Cove, is an ancient burial monument on the summit of Knockmany Hill, near the village of Augher in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It is the remains of a Neolithic passage tomb and its stones are decorated with rare megalithic art. They are protected by a concrete chamber and mound, built in 1959 by the Department of the Environment, roughly resembling the mound that would have originally covered it. The stones can only be viewed through the entrance gates - there is no way inside possible. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knockmany_Passage_Tomb There is a parking space at the bottom of Knockmany Hill - you can start from there - mostly easy to walk. There are no signs - but if you take the ways uphill you'll find the tomb.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any easy, family-friendly walks around Tullyquin?

Yes, the region offers several easy walks suitable for families. The Ecclesville Forest loop from Fintona is a great option. It's a relatively flat, 3.1-mile (4.9 km) trail through pleasant woodlands that takes about an hour and fifteen minutes to complete, making it manageable for all ages.

What is the typical terrain like on the hiking trails?

Most hikes around Tullyquin take you through rolling hills and woodlands. You can expect well-defined forest paths, some of which can be muddy after rain. The routes generally feature moderate but manageable climbs rather than steep, mountainous ascents.

Are there many circular or looped walks available?

Yes, looped walks are very common in the Tullyquin area, allowing you to start and finish in the same spot without retracing your steps. For a longer circular route, consider the Viewpoint – Knockmany Forest loop from Augher, which is a 7.5-mile (12 km) circuit with some rewarding views.

Can I bring my dog on the trails around Tullyquin?

Dogs are generally welcome in the forest parks, but they should be kept on a leash, especially in areas where livestock may be present or to protect local wildlife. Always be sure to clean up after your pet to keep the trails enjoyable for everyone.

How difficult are the hikes in this region?

The hikes range from easy to moderate. Easy trails are mostly flat with minimal elevation gain, while moderate routes, like the Knockmany Forest loop, involve steady climbs with around 150 meters of ascent. There are no technically difficult or expert-level mountain climbs in this immediate guide.

What should I pack for a day of hiking in Tullyquin?

It's wise to wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots as paths can be uneven and muddy. Pack waterproof clothing, as the weather can change quickly. Also, bring enough water and some snacks, especially for longer routes. A fully charged phone with the route downloaded is also recommended as network coverage can be unreliable in forested areas.

Is there parking available at the trailheads?

Most of the established forest parks, such as Knockmany Forest and Ecclesville Forest, have designated car parks near the main trailheads. However, these can fill up on weekends, so arriving earlier in the day is a good idea. For trails starting in more rural locations, parking may be limited to small lay-bys on the roadside.

Are there any trails with good viewpoints?

Yes, several trails lead to rewarding viewpoints. The Knockmany Forest – Viewpoint loop from Clare More is a popular 3-mile (4.8 km) walk specifically designed to take you to a scenic spot overlooking the surrounding countryside.

How long do the hikes around Tullyquin usually take?

The duration varies depending on the route. Shorter, easier walks like those in Ecclesville Forest can be completed in about an hour. More moderate loops, such as those exploring Knockmany Forest, typically take between 2 and 3 hours to complete.

Are there any particularly long hikes for a full day out?

For a longer challenge, you could try the Turnaround Point loop from Knockatallan. This moderate trail covers over 6 miles (10 km) and takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes, offering a more substantial outing through the area's characteristic landscape.
