Founded around 1050, Butenheim was one of the oldest fortified castles in Alsace. It belonged to the house of Andlau when it was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War (1618-48). The Andlau abandoned the site and settled on the site of the present castle of Hombourg. The last remains of the castle of Butenheim were razed from 1860-65, today only a few remains of the walls remain.

Initially installed in the castle of Butenheim, the family of Andlau built their new residence in the domain of Hombourg, in the XVIIth century. This first castle was looted and burnt down during the Revolution. In 1820, the Mulhousien industrialist Nicolas Koechlin rebuilt the central part of the current castle. In 1880 and 1901 finally, the count of Maupéou had the two wings built and gave the castle its current appearance. During the First World War, there was the German general staff. Today the castle is located in the middle of a 2 x 18 hole golf course and houses a restaurant.
