Beinn Ghlas

Highlight • Trail

On the usual route to Ben Lawers, it's Beinn Ghlas that dominates the view ahead, hiding its parent peak from view. This is a wonderfully accessible Munro, especially given its 3,619-foot (1,103 m) height, thanks to the high Ben Lawers car park.

Beinn Ghlas can be bypassed either in ascent or descent via a path that contours around its northern flanks. It's also possible to link Beinn Ghlas to Meall Corranaich to the northwest.

Ben Lawers summit

Highlight • Natural Monument

The culminating point of a sprawling mountain range to the north of Loch Tay, Ben Lawers is a very popular mountain – and with good reason. Celebrated flora and fauna, top-of-the-beanstalk views, a conveniently high car park at almost (1,600 feet) 500m, and a glorious multi-Munro ridge traverse are just a few of its appealing features.

Ben Vrackie summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

Ben Vrackie, at 2,759 feet (841 m), is classified as a Corbett. It's significantly higher than the surrounding hills so you get great views, especially north into the Cairngorms and west down Loch Tummel. Most people walk it via the path from Pitlochry to the south. It's a great walk with between 2,000 and 2,600 feet (600 - 800 m) of ascent.

Schiehallion summit

Highlight • Summit

From the west the mountain appears as an almost perfect pyramid. In reality it’s a long, tapered hill, which climbs smoothly and conveniently to a narrow, elevated summit. It was once used to weigh the world, fairies are rumoured to gather on its slopes, and it’s sometimes described as the centre of Scotland.

Ben Chonzie Summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

This Munro is almost entirely ridable climbable on a mountain bike and lots of fun on the way back down.

Meall nan Tarmachan Summit

Highlight • Climb

Meall nan Tarmachan, the Hill of the Ptarmigan, is the highest peak and only Munro on the Tarmachan Ridge. At 3,422 feet (1,044 m), it's not as high as nearby Ben Lawers but many hillwalkers prefer it for its rough, rocky and entertaining terrain. It's also very easily accessed from the high car park to the east.

Cairnwell Summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Cairnwell is better known for the road beneath it and its ski developments than its beauty as a mountain viewpoint. However, it does hold the title of being the quickest Munro to summit when ascended straight from the pass. Once you're free from the ski paraphernalia, the hike over to Càrn nan Sac and Carn a'Gheoidh makes it all worthwhile.

Carn Liath

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Carn Liath is a 975m Munro mountain in the Scottish Highlands. It sits to the east of Glen Tilt. We parked at the north end of Loch Moraig before walking up a track and then over very marshy ground before starting the ascent.

UPDATE 24/06/24 - A great deal of path laying has been undertaken since my initial tip was made - there is now a stone pitched and gravel path over the boggy section at the base of Carn Liath. Bravo to those who worked on this project 👏🏼

Meall Corranaich summit

Highlight • Climb

Meall Corranaich is a 3,507-foot (1,069 m) Munro in the Scottish Highlands. It's often climbed alongside Meall a' Choire Lèith but sometimes as part of a huge day with the five Munros in the Ben Lawers range. Views across to the Ben Lawers range are simply magnificent from the summit.

The blessing is also that this Munro climb starts at 1,800 feet (550 m) thanks to the tarmacked high mountain pass, so it's great for beginners or those wanting to build their hill fitness.

Meall Buidhe Summit

Highlight • Climb

Meall Buidhe is a 3,058-foot (932 m) Munro in the Scottish Highlands. Leave the car at the dam of Loch an Daimh and climb the relatively short pass to the summit of this Munro. It's possible to get down for lunch and climb the Munro on the opposite side of the loch in the afternoon!
