The letters were used to help early aircraft identify the aerodrome, before the use of radio or radar system. They are believed to be over 100 years old. Approx 5 meters tall and 34 meters wide.

Beaulieu Heath was used as an airfield during WW2, it was one of 11 located around the New Forest National Park during the time. These days, the heathland is used as an area for walkers, joggers, cyclists, and model aircraft flyers to enjoy.
