November 1, 2025, The Keyhole

On Harmondsworth Moor, squashed between the M25 and Heathrow Airport, is land which has been returned to nature after being gravel pits and landfill. There is a lovely hilltop, which is called the Keyhole. A narrow path between two small mounds is a path is lined by large rectangular stones - remnants of the original Waterloo Bridge demolished in 1935. The form a narrow passage to a wider opening, or reminiscent of a keyhole. The stones include an inscription that reads "FOR WORDS, LIKE NATURE HALF REVEAL AND HALF CONCEAL THE SOUL WITHIN" Worth a detour for both the history and the views.

For an optimal experience at Hilltop View, plan your visit during late spring to early summer (May to June). [1] This period offers mild weather and longer daylight hours, enhancing the panoramic views. Ensure you wear sturdy footwear, as the terrain can be uneven. Don't forget to bring a camera to capture the breathtaking scenery. [1] https://skybridgecars.com/a-transfer-trip-to-britain-s-most-scenic-hilltop-views-and-panoramas

If arriving by car there is a (very very) small National Trust carpark on Magna Carter Lane. From there you can follow the footpaths through fields towards the priory ruins and the Ankerwyke Yew. The notice board with more information is located across a stream and worth a read!
