May 9, 2023, Stoke Park Estate

Stoke Park is a 270-acre open green space clearly visible from the M32 on the way into or out of Bristol. The yellow Dower House was built in 1563 as a private home, it's been a hospital and is now private apartments. The wider estate which includes a lake, old gun emplacements, a hermitage tunnel and areas of woodland is all open to the public.

A conspicuous landmark visible from many places in and around Bristol, the Purdown BT Tower is a 230-foot (70 m) telecommunications tower built high on Purdown, a hill above the city. A run along Purdown rewards with extensive views across Bristol. Nearby are the remains of an anti aircraft battery from the Second World War. The area is now home to a herd of goats who have been encouraged to graze the land here.

The lovely goats would be a cracking reason to take the kids on a walk through Stoke park, although they aren't here at all times. Seem to be here very often at the moment though!

Brilliant little gravel trail along the edge of the park, but look out for walkers!

Ruins of a WWII anti aircraft battery fabled to be the location of a ‘mega-gun’, now doubling as a street-art gallery and occasionally a goat holiday home. Part of the Stoke Park Estate which is happy for bikes to roam the trails and paths in the area. The views from here are some of the best over Bristol. You can’t miss the place - just head for the telecoms tower which you can see for miles around. The battery is right underneath it.
