December 3, 2025, Fog on the River Severn

The river Severn is usually good for generating fog on a cold still morning, and there are fine old trees with mistletoe that create excellent silhouettes.

This stretch of the river Severn is a real delight. It's quiet and level, with quite sizeable and steep sided hills on the other bank in two places (cliffs even?). Not surprisingly you will see people fishing in quiet tranquil conditions.

These disused and now flooded gravel pits are now a haven for all manner of ducks, waders and geese. The area is also perhaps surprisingly quiet so the birds don't get disturbed, and so if you are a bird watcher, this is a great place to go.

Lovely little café, interesting menu, good food. Excellent cycling stop. Open on Mondays when lots of cafés seem to be shut.

August 24, 2024, Upton Bridge

Until the 20th century, it was the only bridge across River Severn from Tewkesbury to Worcester. Now, it's a well-surfaced bridge with Severn Way going perpendicular to it.

Until the later half of the 20th century, the bridge at Upton was the only one across the River Severn between Worcester and Tewkesbury; the present bridge was built in 1940. Oliver Cromwell's soldiers crossed the Severn here to win the battle of Upton before the main Battle of Worcester in the English Civil War.
