Padley Manor (also known as Padley Hall) is a historic medieval manor site best known for its connection to Elizabethan religious persecution and the Padley Martyrs. The site dates back before the Norman Conquest. William the Conqueror granted the estate to the De Bernac family, who later changed their surname to Padley. On July 12, 1588, the manor was raided by Protestant authorities. Two Catholic priests, Nicholas Garlick and Robert Ludlam, were found hiding in the walls. They were arrested, tried for high treason, and executed in Derby, later becoming celebrated as the Padley Martyrs. The family lost the estate due to heavy recusancy fines and debts, and the main double-courtyard house was largely demolished or fell into ruin.
