Small, unguarded shelter found in this area between the Comapedrosa and Arcalís valleys. A perfect stone cabin to spend the night if the weather conditions worsen or simply to take shelter under a roof.

It is not the typical mountain refuge found on most slopes in this small country, where there are many and some of them free. In this case it is a boarding house, but getting there by the track is already beautiful.

The hut makes a very positive impression. The owner is friendly and the prices are okay. Everything looks new and clean. Water can be tasted here for free. After that you can go to the summit (Comapedrosa).

A great mountain hut. The bunks are metal and a little squeaky but I still slept well here. They give you a free token for a shower that lasts a few minutes. Payment is by cash. We were offered 2 options for dinner - pumpkin soup or pasta bake, followed by beef stew or lentil stew and 3 slices of watermelon for dessert. Brilliant!

Beautiful hiking trail to a refuge, which is not always managed. It is definitely worth walking a little further higher, where 2 streams flow into each other.

La Massana offers a range of mountain huts, from basic, unguarded shelters like the Refuge of the Springs, which provides a cozy stone cabin with a fireplace and nearby water, to fully serviced refuges such as Comapedrosa Refuge, which offers food, accommodation, toilets, and showers.
Many popular hiking trails lead to the huts. For instance, the ascent along the stream to Comapedrosa Refuge is a scenic climb through a nature reserve. Another beautiful trail leads to Refugi Cortals de Sispony. You can find more hiking options in the Hiking in La Massana guide.
The Comapedrosa Refuge is a fully serviced hut with a capacity for 48 people. It provides toilets, showers, food, and accommodation. Visitors have praised its clean appearance and friendly staff, noting that fresh water is available and free shower tokens are often provided.
The difficulty levels vary. The ascent to Refuge of the Springs is considered medium difficulty, taking about 1.5 to 2.5 hours. The hike to Comapedrosa Refuge is approximately 3 hours long with a 750-meter elevation gain. Many trails are intermediate, but some, like the 'Ascent to Pico de Comapedrosa', are considered difficult. Always check specific route details before you go.
The summer months, typically June to October, are ideal for visiting the huts as they are most accessible on foot. While some unguarded refuges like the Refuge of the Springs are open year-round, mountain weather can change rapidly, and nights can be cold, so appropriate gear is essential, especially outside of summer.
While specific family-friendly hut designations are not always available, many trails offer varying difficulty levels. For example, the 'Hiking through the magical forest of Minairons' is an easy route that could be suitable for families. When planning, consider shorter, less strenuous routes to basic huts for a family outing. Always check the specific trail difficulty and hut amenities.
For any hut stay, especially in unguarded refuges, it's advisable to carry a warm sleeping bag, appropriate clothing layers, food, water, and a headlamp. Even in managed huts, personal items and a sleeping bag liner are often recommended. Mountain weather is unpredictable, so be prepared for cold temperatures, even in summer.
Absolutely. The huts are situated amidst stunning Pyrenean landscapes, offering panoramic views. Comapedrosa Refuge is located near Andorra's highest peak, Comapedrosa, providing access to breathtaking vistas. The trail to Ascent along the stream to Refugi de Comapedrosa features many small cascades and natural beauty.
Beyond hiking, La Massana offers various outdoor activities. You can explore waterfall hikes, such as the 'Toll Bullidor Trail', detailed in the Waterfall hikes in La Massana guide. Mountain biking is also popular, with trails like the 'Port de Cabús Loop' available, as highlighted in the MTB Trails in La Massana guide.
Visitors frequently praise the prime locations of the huts, offering access to numerous hiking trails and panoramic views of the Andorran wilderness. The friendly staff and clean facilities at managed refuges like Comapedrosa Refuge are often highlighted. The opportunity for wildlife observation and photography, along with the essential rest areas, also contributes to a positive experience.
Mobile phone coverage can vary. For instance, the Refugi de les Fonts (Refuge of the Springs) is noted to have mobile phone coverage. However, in remote mountain areas, coverage may be intermittent or unavailable, so it's always wise to not rely solely on your phone for navigation or emergencies.
For managed huts like Comapedrosa Refuge, especially during peak season, it is highly recommended to make reservations for accommodation and meals. Unguarded huts, such as the Refuge of the Springs, do not require reservations as they operate on a first-come, first-served basis and are typically free of charge.
