Wilko Koning
February 6, 2024, North Rim Ranger Station

The North Rim Ranger Station is opened irregularly in the summertime. During the wintertime, it is closed. It offers a self-pay station for the park entrance fee, a self-registration kiosk for wilderness payments (when the Ranger Station is closed), and there's an offering of maps, information, a picnic shelter, a toilet, and a water fountain.

Giant Grandfather Rock is a huge granite outcropping that branches into the river. You get a good view of it near the end of the Pine Creek Trail.

Matthew
August 24, 2023, Crawford Reservoir

Crawford State Park is best known for its fishing, as Crawford Reservoir is a stocked lake. There are also some hiking trails on the property that hug up against the edge of the water and pass by the camping and day use areas offered by the park. The trails here are some of the easier "hikes" you will find in Colorado; they feel more like easy walks along the water.

A short and fairly easy hiking loop from the visitor center. There is definitely a couple of steep sections, though! This is why I recommend hiking CCW.

Chasm View Trail is not the longest of hikes but it offers incredible views on the section of path that follows the canyon, with the Painted Wall Viewing spot as its definite highlight. On the South Rim, there is a dedicated Painted Wall 'hike' but if you are on the North Rim this is the hike to do if you want to catch this magnificent feature in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The Painted Wall is the tallest wall in Colorado and the third tallest in The Lower 48 after El Cap and Notch Peak.

This might be the prettiest spot along the Dead Horse Loop Trail with gorgeous views of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Looking North into the canyon you can see the camping area at the bottom of the Tomichi Route on the right side of the river.

Dead Horse Trail brings you to the Dead Horse Loop Trail, which offers beautiful Black Canyon of the Gunnison views. These trails are a little less popular compared to other trails due to their location at the more remote North Rim, which gives you a relatively solitary experience.
