In 1798, Goethe bought the then Rittergut Oberroßla to create a stable livelihood for his Christiane Vulpius. Furthermore, with this acquisition, he received a seat and a vote in the Weimar parliament. However, he sold it again in 1803, and in 1853 the building burned down. The hotel Schloßhof was built on its foundations, but that too no longer exists. Only the foundation walls along the road and the remains of the garden wall have survived.
