Tips from the Community

Heinz K
April 19, 2026, Das ehemalige Goethe-Gut in Oberroßla

In 1798, Goethe bought the then Rittergut Oberroßla to create a stable livelihood for his Christiane Vulpius. Furthermore, with this acquisition, he received a seat and a vote in the Weimar parliament. However, he sold it again in 1803, and in 1853 the building burned down. The hotel Schloßhof was built on its foundations, but that too no longer exists. Only the foundation walls along the road and the remains of the garden wall have survived.

The Ilmschlößchen was a very well-known excursion restaurant in the region. However, it was demolished in the 60s due to dilapidation. At least as a picture on this house wall, where the Feldschlößchen used to stand, it has been preserved to this day.

We only saw it from the outside, but maybe we'll see it from the inside sometime.

The path along the Ilm is also a real highlight with children, because here they can splash in the water, throw stones and collect wooden sticks.

The imposing castle complex is over 900 years old. Particularly impressive is the 57-meter-high keep, the highest in Germany.
