The sand of the dune was formed 10,000 years ago, but it is not as if this dune has been there for that long. It is also not that big. Like all dunes in the Griesen area, the sand only became a problem for people in the Middle Ages, as they had exploited and cut down the previously existing forest. The sand spread unhindered and shifting dunes formed. The problem was solved after reforestation. This dune is supposed to still shift, but I don't think that is the case, as it is enclosed and partially covered by pine trees. Wind can hardly get through here anymore. That may have been different some time ago.

The place can only be reached from Rüterberg via a somewhat bumpy road. But it is very idyllic.

History lesson. The village belonged to the GDR, but the GDR also put up an extra fence to prevent too many people from fleeing across the Elbe. And to keep the whole thing small and manageable, the brickworks were demolished. As few residents as possible in the critical zone. The fence was closed from 11 p.m. - and that in the 20th century! - A nice woman at the campsite told me this. There are information boards about it down by the Elbe.

Be sure to pack insect/mosquito spray! The entire forest between the dunes and the moor is well visited by biting beasts, depending on the season/weather conditions. ;)

The HERRsche clay pit is located on the eastern edge of the municipality of Rüterberg and you can see the remains of the clinker factory demolished in 1971. The Chilehaus in Hamburg, built in 1922, was bricked with the bricks produced here with the particularly hard-wearing surface. (Source: griesegebiet.de) On the banks of the Elbe you can still see the remains of the quay wall for loading the stones. The forest path in the direction of Dömitz is partially paved with clinker quarry from this brickworks.
