The Middle Innerste Valley with Kanstein is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony towns of Langelsheim and Goslar and the municipality of Liebenburg in the Goslar district, the independent city of Salzgitter, the municipalities of Haverlah, Sehlde, Heere and Baddeckenstedt in the Wolfenbüttel district and the municipality of Holle and the city of Bad Salzdetfurth in the Hildesheim district. The nature reserve with the designation NSG BR 131 is 563 hectares in size. Of this, 176 hectares are in the Goslar district, 167 hectares in the Hildesheim district, 156 hectares in the Wolfenbüttel district and 64 hectares in the city of Salzgitter. The southern part of the nature reserve is almost identical with the FFH area “Innerste-Aue (with Kanstein)”. In its entire length, it is often identical with the EU bird sanctuary “Innerste Valley from Langelsheim to Groß Düngen”. To the north of Langelsheim, the 2.3 hectare nature reserve “Schlackenhalde Bredelem” borders this nature reserve. The area has been under nature protection since September 25, 2008.
