The view from the tower is worth it! The picnic area is great, as the tables and benches are made of bricks, it is a good idea to bring some seating mats.

The ponds were probably created by Cistercians for fish farming in the 12th century. The Großer Paul pond was designated as a natural monument requiring special protection in 1933. It dried up due to open-cast lignite mining between 1987 and 1993 and had to be artificially irrigated. All ponds are connected by ditches. The entire area has been a nature reserve since 1997, as it is a habitat for many amphibians and water birds that need to be protected. The area was transferred to the Brandenburg Nature Conservation Fund in 2004. The foundation bought additional areas and today ensures that the habitat for animals and plants is preserved through hydraulic engineering and forestry measures. https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teichlandschaft_Buchw%C3%A4ldchen-Muckwar https://www.naturschutzfonds.de/natur-schuetzen/stiftungsflaechen/ueberblick-nach-landkreisen/oberspreewald-lausitz/flaechen-im-nsg-teichlandschaft-buchwaeldchen-muckwar

The Luckaitztal “station” is a stop on the RE7 between Berlin and Senftenberg. You get off and find yourself in the middle of the forest.

On an overgrown farm on the village street in Muckwar there is this great rest area that is actually very inviting. A large tree stump serves as a table and several small stumps provide seating. There is also a bench next to it. And all around is wilderness.

The Buchwäldchen-Muckwar pond landscape is a fascinating nature reserve that has retained its special atmosphere despite occasional droughts. The ponds, which originated in the 12th century and were once created by Cistercians for fish farming, are now a valuable refuge for amphibians and water birds. Even though the water level has fluctuated in recent years, the area remains a lively habitat. Thanks to the hydraulic engineering measures that have been implemented since the area was transferred to the Brandenburg Nature Conservation Fund in 2004, the balance of nature is maintained here. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility of the landscape on winding paths and gain an insight into the historical significance of the ponds. The region is particularly at its most beautiful in the morning or evening hours when the light gently reflects off the water surfaces.
