Here on Dackelweg, behind the dike, is a small holiday home settlement dating back to the 1950s. So there's always plenty to see.

A beautiful singletrack trail leads across the Fernau stream through the salt marshes of the Probstei region, which were once regularly flooded by the Baltic Sea. Unlike many other paths here, it is made of gravel and designed as a singletrack, not concrete slabs. The trail crosses drainage ditches several times, and on one side, old willows form a semi-avenue-like line – ideal for a nature walk or a short bike ride.

beautiful route through nature, you can hardly see anything of the lake anymore due to the increasing silting up, as it is becoming more and more overgrown

Lake Barsbek and its surroundings were declared a nature reserve in 1982. The aim is to preserve "geologically significant features of a shallow, coastal brackish lake with extensive reed beds, species-rich brackish tall herbaceous marshes, and salt marsh areas, as well as a diverse fauna." The dike separates the lake and its surroundings from the influence of the Baltic Sea. This has led to dramatic changes in the site's characteristics. Without regular saltwater flooding, the soils and the lake have become salty, and the typical salt marsh plants have disappeared. Drainage also causes the mineralized soil to subside, thus causing the terrain to sink. Source: Information panel.

The grassland areas in the nature reserve are mown for maintenance and, like the dikes, grazed by cattle and sheep. The nature reserve is managed by the Schleswig-Holstein State Hunting Association.[5] It borders the dike to the northwest and the former Barsbek dike to the east. Hiking trails run across the dikes and along the southern border of the nature reserve. Information boards can be found at several locations. The nature reserve is almost entirely surrounded by agricultural land.
