The large linden tree in the north of the town of Kierspe is a reminder of the era of the Femegerichte (courts of oath) in the Middle Ages. It is considered a natural monument and is estimated to be approximately 300 to 400 years old. Eberhard Fricke, one of the best experts on Westphalian Feme jurisdiction, describes the Thingslinde (Thingslinde) as a "legal monument that is unique far and wide." Many a trial was likely conducted under this tree in the Middle Ages. At that time, it stood at the intersection of an important medieval country road (Frankfurt to Amsterdam) and, due to its location on the road on a hill outside the village, was visible from afar. This was probably also the reason why a court was built there. Today, the linden tree, particularly marked by its age, is significantly more obscured from the cityscape by the modern development.
