The Roman milestone recalls the importance of Carnuntum as a major traffic hub on the northern border of the Roman Empire. Such stone road markers stood along Roman long-distance roads and indicated distances in Roman miles, with one mile corresponding to approximately 1.48 kilometers. They often also bore inscriptions with the names of the emperors under whose rule roads were built or maintained. The milestone provides an impression of the well-developed road network that connected Carnuntum with other cities and military sites of the Roman Empire.

Roman milestone Findspot: South of the legionary fortress Material: Leithakalk (calcareous sandstone), Leithagebirge/Winden Datation: 142/143 Imp(eratoris) Caes(aris) Titi Aeli(i) Hadriani Antonini Aug (usti) Pii p(atris) p(atriae) co(n)s (ulis) III trib (unicia) pot (estate) VI a K(arnunto) m(ilia) p(assuum) „(Milestone) of Emperor Caesar Titus Aelius Hadrianus Antoninus Augustus Pius (= Antoninus Pius), father of the fatherland, consul for the third time, holder of tribunician power for the 6th time. From Carnuntum one mile." Milestones stood along the roads and indicated to the traveler the distance in miles to the next larger city. One mile corresponds to a thousand double steps (milia passuum) and thus 1,480 meters. The milestones also served to pay homage to the emperor, who was indicated with his full title. This allows the milestones to be dated to the exact year. In addition, the governor may also have been mentioned. Sometimes the inscription contained additional explanations, such as that a part of the road or a bridge had been restored. Milestones were thus also an important propaganda tool for the emperor, who thus presented his achievements to the population. This milestone was erected only one mile, i.e. about 1.5 km from Carnuntum. You can see another milestone in the park directly opposite the museum. It was found in the Canabae, southeast of the legionary fortress. It mentions Emperor Marcus Aurelius and his co-regent Lucius Verus. It is dated to the year 161.
