Saint Pancras, to whom the church standing here has been entrusted as patron, was according to tradition publicly executed at the end of the 3rd / beginning of the 4th century under Emperor Diocletian for his Christian faith. The martyr's body was buried on the Roman Via Aurelia – in the catacombs later named after him – under the present-day church "San Pancrazio". The feast day of Saint Pancras is on May 12th, he is one of the three so-called "Ice Saints" in popular piety, along with Servatius and Boniface (in some regions supplemented by the "Cold Sophie" a day later).
