The Old Synagogue of Wittlich is now a cultural and conference center, open almost daily (2 PM - 5 PM; Wed also 9:30 AM - 12 PM; closed: Mon). You can see the beautiful, large former prayer room (= today event room) as well as a large, very interesting permanent exhibition about the history of this synagogue, built in 1910, which was desecrated inside during the November Pogrom of 1938. The building was preserved, however; the city bought it at a much too low price. From 1940 to 1944, it served as a prison camp for French prisoners of war and forced laborers. Afterwards, the synagogue fell into disrepair until the city of Wittlich acquired it from the Jewish Community of Trier in 1975 and later renovated it (reopened in 1977). The Jewish community of Wittlich was completely wiped out in the Holocaust (deportations began in Wittlich from Oct. 1941). A memorial (= walled-off former Torah shrine) is located to the left of the entrance to the synagogue.

The wooden bridge over the Lieser River at this point has a few steps on the side (street) opposite the villa. There's no ramp (side ramp). Getting up there with a heavy e-bike is almost impossible without extra effort (removing batteries, taking off luggage, etc.). Even then, you'd probably have to use the e-bike push assist, and we haven't tried how well that works. Conclusion: Don't plan an e-bike route towards the villa that includes this bridge. PS: The opposite direction, from the villa across the Lisa River to the street, could work, but that would also be a "heavy" undertaking in my opinion. PPS: Simply carry bio-bikes up on your shoulder 😊

An information board and a ground marker indicate that the 50th parallel north crosses here. The back of the information board explains that this path is part of a hiking trail, aptly named "Gradwanderung," which crosses the 50th parallel more than 25 times.

The synagogue in Wittlich was built in 1909/10. During the pogrom on November 10, 1938, the synagogue's interior was vandalized by SA men and others. In 1939, the city of Wittlich purchased the building, which had served as a prisoner of war camp during World War II. The approximately 250 Wittlich Jews were expelled from the city, with the last deportation taking place in 1942. One-third of the members of the Jewish community were murdered in concentration camps. After the war, none of the survivors returned, meaning the synagogue lost its function. Source and further information: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synagoge_Wittlich
