According to legend, the following happened: "...a long, long time ago, the city of Oldenburg wanted to build a church in honor of God. When the devil found out about it, he became angry and sought revenge by burying the church and the city that wanted to build it forever under the ground. He had to do this before the black rooster crowed the next morning.

The Wildenloh is probably the remainder of a vast forest area that stretched from Oldenburg to Klein-Scharrel around 8,000 years ago and disappeared into the expanding Wildenloh Moor. Today's Wildenloh covers around 190 hectares and offers a varied forest landscape due to the different soil conditions.
