Easy hikes and walks in Lower Beechmont Conservation Area

Stoney Creek is a small stream that flows through lush subtropical rainforest under a canopy of towering trees. There is a small footbridge that makes crossing easy, with moss-covered rocks, ferns, and shaded pools that create a lovely, peaceful setting. As one of several waterways draining the mountain’s volcanic slopes, it contributes to the rich rainforest environment in this section of the park.

Jenyns Circuit is the longest walking track in this section of Tamborine National Park, and extends from the Palm Grove Circuit into drier eucalypt forest. It’s well-maintained, with vegetation that changes along the way, from lush subtropical rainforest to hoop pines, brush box, grey gums, and a grove of ancient cycads. This circuit is a great way to experience two distinct forest communities within a single walk.

The Palm Grove Section in Tamborine National Park protects a beautiful pocket of subtropical rainforest, with walking tracks that pass under towering strangler figs, piccabeen palms, and other ancient trees. The shaded trails are easy to follow, and range from short rainforest circuits to longer walks that extend into the neighbouring eucalypt forest. This section is a fantastic introduction to the lush scenery and rich plant life of Tamborine Mountain, and is perfect for a peaceful stroll or a longer bushwalk to explore this beautiful area.

Lower Beechmont Conservation Area stands as the largest conservation area managed by the City of Gold Coast. It is an important part of the Canungra to Coombabah habitat corridor for animals that travel long distances between habitats. This area is a rejuvenating natural getaway for those on the Gold Coast looking to escape the city and breathe some fresh air.

Freeman’s Lookout Track is a short hike through the woods, just under 1000 meters in one direction. The track has a gradual incline heading down first. The trail is dirt, and right near the end of the trail is a nice lookout point, Freeman’s Lookout.

Freeman’s Lookout, a small window-like opening in the trees, with a rewarding viewpoint over the Nerang River valley and rolling hinterland hills, with the Gold Coast skyline visible on a clear day. This viewpoint is usually a quiet area to relax, with a bench to take a break.

Witches Falls Circuit begins just beyond the commemorative shelter and descends in a series of zigzags down the mountainside. The track moves through open banksia forest before shifting into denser rainforest, where large strangler figs and piccabeen palms take over the canopy. Along the way, you pass seasonal lagoons that fill after heavy rain and come alive with frogs and insects. The circuit leads to the lookout platform beside Witches Falls before looping back through contrasting forest types.

This stretch of Tamborine National Park goes through a dense stand of piccabeen palms, their tall, slender trunks rising straight from the rainforest floor. Fallen fronds carpet the ground and the narrow dirt track threads quietly between them, with filtered light breaking through the green canopy above. It feels enclosed and distinctly subtropical here. After rain, the surface can be soft and slightly muddy, so watch your footing as you pass through this shaded pocket of forest.
