Small deciduous woodland featuring steep riverside cliffs, wooden steps and a beech grove. Explore deep into the woodland to discover old mining remnants including a paved stream thought to support quarrying activities.

nice easy parking, walk accross the bridge over the river and you can either walk left or right giving you two options to walk up or down the river. quite pleasant but can get a bit boggy when it rains so wear the correct footwear. does get busy in the warmer months

I always try and park via the main road onnthe Pittyme side. And walk down the steap stairs. Rather than park in the car park

Nestled on the wooded banks of the River Wear, Finchale Priory's ruins are a beautiful sight. Founded in 1196, this Grade I-listed building was an outpost of Durham Cathedral and was favoured by Durham's monks as a holiday retreat. The priory was supposedly founded by the sailor, merchant and adventurer St Godric, who settled here after his many expeditions.

Shortcut to the Abbey, rough path / track. Were supposed to walk this bit, stairs at the bottom and muddy, big challenge to ride up it, if we were allowed. NOTE you will have to lift your bike up some stairs to get on the Bridge at the bottom. Not recommended if your bike is heavy or loaded with panniers., There is an alternative road route to the Abbey.
