The castle was built between 1232 and 1270 (very quickly) by the Teutonic Order of the Hospital of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the German House in Jerusalem. It is defended by steep slopes to the west and south, and by walls and moats to the north and east.
The castle's location allowed for a direct view of the fortress in Toruń, and the castle itself provided an excellent observation point.
On the northwest side stood a building with a basement housing a chapel, refectory, and chapter house, connected to the southwest wing by cloisters.
The courtyard is enclosed by a wall with an entrance gate. The outbuildings included stables, barns, workshops, and a granary. In 1404, the castle housed as many as 189 horses: the knights' war horses, the cadets' horses, draft horses, post horses, mares, and foals. From 1386 to 1415, the castle was the seat of the Biergłowice commanders. During the Thirteen Years' War, in February 1454, the castle was occupied by the Prussian Confederation and became the administrative seat of the Teutonic Order's procurator. From 1474 to 1840, it was owned by the Toruń authorities. After a fire in 1522, the castle fell into ruin. Since 1840, when it passed into private hands, the southwest wing and gate tower were rebuilt. On November 3, 1908, another devastating fire broke out in the rebuilt buildings, destroying the roofing. In 1911, reconstruction was carried out according to a design by Conrad Steinbrecht. The history of the Teutonic Order (Full name: Order of the Hospital of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the German House in Jerusalem), as is almost always the case with "holy" organizations, is a centuries-long history of constant violence. Only the Reformation stopped this mercantile activity. However, it is worth mentioning the efforts to establish a university, a school for girls (very rare at that time) and a set of geometric and theological laws and treatises.

Medieval Town of Toruń

Highlight • Historical Site

The old town of Toruń (German Thorn) was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
Except for a street from the late 19th century, almost the entire development is medieval. The historical area consists of the old town (city law 1231/1233) and the Neustadt (city law 1246), which developed as a craftsman settlement. Between both lies the castle ruin of the Teutonic Order. (Wikipedia)
A very nice and lively old town. There is a lot to visit, but also nice shops and restaurants.

In 1853, the people of Torun erected a monument to their most famous offspring, Nikolaus Copernicus, on the market square near the house where they were supposed to be born. Copernicus lived in Torun for many years. In 1807 Napoleon expressed astonishment that there was still no monument. The location of his grave in Frauenburg could not be found at that time. The memorial was financed through donations. The main amount came from the Prussian King Wilhelm IV.

The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist in Toruń – a Gothic brick church, a former parish church of Toruń's Old Town.

The history of the church in this place (over the centuries there were several versions of the building) begins in the 13th century.

In the 15th century, in the fourth version, the church was given its final shape, preserved to this day.

The church is one of the most magnificent examples of Gothic architecture in the Chełmno region.

It contains Gothic paintings from the 14th century. On the eastern wall there are figures of the church's patrons – St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist from around 1360, on the northern wall there is a large and iconographically developed scene from around 1380–90 depicting the Crucifixion on the Tree of Jesse, and around it the Last Judgement.

Chełmno A bit poor, quiet and in places neglected, but it has something about it that makes you want to return. I'm here every year or two and with each visit I like it more and more. It is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Poland. To this day, its 13th-century urban layout has survived almost intact, and over two kilometers of defensive walls are among the best preserved in the country. A walk along them and through the narrow streets gives a much better idea of a medieval town than many history lessons. The center had a huge impact on the development of urban planning and self-governance in this part of Europe. It was from here that the order began to organize the administration of the conquered lands, and the town became a model for subsequent settlements. In 1233, the Teutonic Knights granted it the so-called Chełmno Law – a medieval "city user manual" that defined the principles of self-governance, trade, and justice. The solution proved so practical that over 200 towns and about 1500 villages in the territory of present-day Poland were later founded according to Chełmno Law. Chełmno is called the City of Lovers. All thanks to the relics of St. Valentine kept in the parish church. It's worth sitting down for a coffee in the market square and just watching. There are no crowds here like in Toruń or Gdańsk, but there is peace and the atmosphere of a small town that doesn't need to prove anything. If I had to point out the most charming small town in Kuyavia and the Chełmno Land, Chełmno would be very high on this list.
