We passed by there in spring, but unfortunately there were no turtles to be seen; they were probably still hibernating.

The rest area is very difficult to see from the hiking trail. You have to walk a few meters uphill into the forest. Nice covered rest area.

The German War Memorial Grünheide ("Memorial for the Victims of War, Fascism and Tyranny") is located about 1 km south of Grünheide in the middle of the forest above the Löcknitz on the L23 between Grünheide and the Fangschleuse train station. The memorial was originally erected in 1922 for the fallen soldiers of the First World War from Grünheide. The memorial survived the demolition of the neighboring Wall Bridge by the Wehrmacht on April 20, 1945 without serious damage. However, when it was renovated in 1995, it was also adapted to the significance of the time. A new stone plaque was attached to the north side and it was renamed "Memorial for the Victims of War, Fascism and Tyranny". This also "covered" 76 years of German history. The memorial in the Löcknitz valley was erected on the eastern side of the road by the Wall Bridge and was originally designed as a memorial grove. During the GDR era, nature reclaimed the memorial grove. the monument was quite overgrown. The area around the monument was cleared of wild growth during the renovation in 1995. With the benches that were put up, the whole thing has regained some of the character of a memorial grove.
