In 1759, the Jesuits were expelled from Portugal by order of the Marquis of Pombal, and the church passed into the hands of the University of Coimbra. It was later acquired by the Discalced Augustinians, known as "frades-grilos" (brothers of the Grilos) for their dark habits, giving rise to the church's popular name.
