November 20, 2023, Loch Lomond

There is a large gravel lot here right on the shore of Loch Lomond which provides access to the the trails around the numerous alpine lakes in the area. You can also access James Peak via a connector from the Upper Lakes trail. If your vehicle can't make it up the gravel road you can always park at the bottom and run up.

This section of trail goes to the upper lakes. Directly above Loch Lomond is Ohman Lake, and Reynolds Lake (with Ice Lake even further up the basin). Once the trail to the lakes finally thaws out, this becomes an extremely popular and beautiful spring and summer trail.

Situated in the beautiful Arapaho National Forest, Discovery Trail passes Jim Creek Campground on the southern side of the creek of the same. The trail partially follows a wooden boardwalk and includes several benches where you can take a break.

Located in Arapaho National Forest, the Challenger Trail leads along Jim Creek and through beautiful forested landscape. Combined with Discover Trail, it forms a loop and if that's not enough for you, you can extend the hike and add Jim Creek Trail.

Can I bring my dog on the easy hiking trails?

Vasquez Peak Wilderness is generally dog-friendly, but it's crucial to check specific trail regulations before heading out. Always keep your dog on a leash, pack out all waste, and ensure they are prepared for high-altitude conditions and potential wildlife encounters.

What is the best time of year to hike the easy trails in Vasquez Peak Wilderness?

The best time to hike easy trails is typically from late spring through early fall (June to September). During summer, you'll experience vibrant wildflowers, but be prepared for sudden afternoon thunderstorms and lightning above timberline. Early mornings are recommended to avoid these. Winter hiking is possible but requires appropriate gear and awareness of avalanche risks.

What kind of natural features or views can I expect on these trails?

Expect breathtaking alpine vistas, especially above the timberline. You'll see unique 'krummholz' trees, which are dwarfed and gnarled spruce and fir shaped by the harsh climate. The area is also known for its extensive wildflowers in summer and features numerous small creeks and high alpine basins, including Vasquez Creek.

Are there any shorter, easy hiking options available?

Absolutely. For a shorter, easy hike, consider the Ruby Gulch Trail, which is less than a kilometer long, or the Discovery and Challenger Trails Loop, which is about 2.0 km.

What should I be aware of when hiking at high elevations in Vasquez Peak Wilderness?

Given that the wilderness is entirely above 10,000 feet, be prepared for thinner air and potential altitude sickness. Always carry plenty of water, wear sun protection, and start your hikes early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms, which are common in summer. Descend to lower elevations if storms approach.

How can I find parking for the easy trailheads?

Parking availability can vary by trailhead. It's advisable to research specific trailhead access points before your visit. Given the remote nature of the wilderness, designated parking areas are usually available but may fill up quickly during peak season. Always adhere to local parking regulations.
