Tips from the Community

The maintained walking trail ends right about here. Although some people make a complete loop out of their walk, that recommends walking across the dam and climbing a fence that is marked for restricted access. Not recommended. Instead, you'll need to hike back the way you came — another opportunity to see wetlands.

The Old Well, situated at the heart of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus, is a landmark with deep historical significance. Built in 1827, it served as the primary water source for the university community and has since evolved into a symbol of academic excellence, tradition, and spirit. Surrounded by a beautiful garden, the Old Well is not only a site for ceremonies and events but also a focal point of campus life. Legend has it that drinking from the well on the first day of classes brings academic success, perpetuating a well-loved tradition among students.
