August 19, 2023, View of the New River from Big Branch Trail

At breaks in the trees, hikers on Big Branch Trail are rewarded for their climbing efforts with spectacular views of the New River—including of Brooks Falls.

What makes this loop special is the views of the New River both to the north and to the south. From the northern part of the loop, you'll also be able to see Sandstone Falls—quite the site from above!

The size of the actual falls at Sandstone Falls will vary some, but for such a short and approachable hike they make a great payoff.

The entire New River falls over the Sandstone Falls. Depending on the water level "ok" to "spectacular". Quite a long journey, but there are also nice places for a picnic

The Castle Rock Trail begins near Grandview Main Overlook and ends where it intersects the Grandview Rim Trail after about 1 km (.6 miles). The hike goes along huge rock walls and below overhanging cliffs. Castle Rock Trail and Grandview Rim Trail can make a great loop of about 1.6 km (almost 1 mile)

Turkey Spur Overlook is at the end of the Grandview Rim Trail about 2.6 km (1.6 miles) from the Visitor Center lying atop a huge rock outcrop. It offers stunning views more than 300 m (almost 1,000 feet) above the New River. The National Park Service had improved the overlook’s wooden boardwalk in 2015 but it was burned in an arson attack a few months later. In partnership with Friends of New River Gorge National River funds were raised for reconstruction and the Overlook was reopened in June 2017.

The Grandview Rim Trail is a pleasant hike through mixed forest from the Grandview Main Overlook to Turkey Spur Overlook. The walking distance is 2.6 km (1.6 miles) in each direction about 425 m (1,400 feet) above the river. It takes about 45 min in each direction. Due to dense forest, there are only few views of the New River from the Rim Trail.

After a short walk from the parking area and Grandview Visitor Center, you will enjoy views of the New River at Grandview Main Overlook about 425 m above the river. You can see a railway and the town of Quinnimont, where the first coal was shipped out of the gorge in 1873. https://www.nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/grandview.htm
