August 2, 2024, Jefferson's Point

Jefferson's Point is a scenic overlook about halfway around the Skyline Trail down a short spur trail. This is a great little detour if completing the loop with fantastic views over the open meadow to the mountains.

Right at the beginning of the Skyline Trail is the Children's Discovery Area, a natural playground that is great for kids of all ages. After you're done playing here, you can pop onto the short, relatively easy Skyline Trail for a great hike with open views of the surrounding mountains.

The falls are set in a peaceful wooded area, providing a nice spot for visitors to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings. August 2, 2024, Saltpeter Cave

Saltpeter Cave, located along the Cedar Creek Trail in Virginia's Natural Bridge State Park, is a small but historically significant cave. It was mined for saltpeter, a key component of gunpowder, during the early 19th century, particularly during the War of 1812. The cave's interior is relatively shallow — and you can actually go inside of it — but its historical importance adds interest to the trail.
