Walking in Beauty (2018) Bronze – 216 x 175 x 136 cm CODERCH & MALAVIA Joan Coderch (Castellar del Vallés – Barcelona, Spain, 1959) Javier Malavia (Oñati – Guipúzcoa, Spain, 1970) About this work: “Walking in Beauty” is the translation of the Navajo term that defines the spiritual path of celebrating the sacred in life. Walking in Beauty means walking in harmony with all things (people, objects, animals… with life itself!). This also includes how we walk—how we feel physically and emotionally—and exploring our own inner desert. Thinking and acting beautifully completely transforms our perception of life and allows us to explore our inner desert in relation to everyone and to life itself. It allows us to leave behind victim mentality and prejudice to make room for curiosity and the desire to know the truth. This is what "walking in beauty" means: living authentically and following the dictates of one's own spirit. A phoenix is tattooed on his back. It is a symbol of hope, self-confidence, remembrance, and renewal—a wondrous bird that senses death and prepares for it with care and serenity, only to rise again from its ashes, unharmed and full of strength. A symbol of resilience. A mandala is also tattooed on his shoulder. The term comes from Sanskrit and means "circle." It represents unity, harmony, and the infinity of the universe through the balance of visual elements. In Buddhist and Hindu traditions, the circle symbolizes the divine. It is an expression of the essence of life in all its forms. Website: teuladamorairaescultura.com

The Church of La Mare de Déu dels Desemparats is located in the old part of Moraira and was originally a chapel. It appears to have been built between 1875 and 1878 (thanks to donations from the Oliver Sisters of Teulada). The geographer Francisco Figueras Pacheco mentioned the chapel's existence in 1910. In 1974, it was established as an independent parish, with Francisco Llopis Blasco (formerly the parish priest of Teulada) as its first priest. The church has a rectangular floor plan, and its foundations are made of stones taken from the walls of the Moraira fortress. It is divided into three naves separated by columns, with the central nave being almost twice the size of the side aisles. It also comprises four sections, the first of which corresponds to the church's expansion carried out in 1981. These works included extending the building towards the facade, adding a vestibule with four arches similar to the traditional riuras (a construction style typical of La Marina Alta). This vestibule was enclosed with glass panels in 1989, and access to the interior is through the arch of the main entrance. Above the vestibule, on the first floor, is the choir, and on the second floor is a parish hall. To the left of this extension, at ceiling level, a square bell tower was erected, housing two bells. The building's ceiling features ribbed vaults marked by arches. The exterior roof is tiled and has three pitches, and the old bell gable (still supporting the bell) has been preserved at the front. The interior is very simple and follows the designs of chapels from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Notable features include the mosaics of the main altar, which frame the image of the patron saint and combine religious scenes with maritime motifs typical of the region. Another mosaic, depicting the crucified Christ, is located on the right side of the second section. Both mosaics are the work of the artist Juan Ros Marí, who was also responsible for the two stained-glass windows with Eucharistic motifs in the former vestibule of the church. On the east facade of the church is a small niche containing an image of Mare de Déu del Carme, the patron saint of sailors, making it the only street chapel in the city with a sculpture.

The medieval tower of Alcalalí stands in the Plaça de l'Ajuntament and was for a long time the tallest building in the city, until a church was built in front of it in the 18th century. Even today, they remain the two tallest buildings in Alcalalí, and no modern construction has detracted from the charm and essence of the historic center. The medieval tower of Alcalalí was built at the end of the 14th century. At that time, Alcalalí and La Vall de Pop were frequently attacked by pirates and bandits; the tower served as a watch post and a refuge in case of invasion. Later, at the behest of the Ruiz de Lihory family, a palatial residence was built, connected to the tower by a drawbridge. This family ruled Alcalalí until 1837, which is why the building is also known as the Torre y Palacio Señorial de Rois de Liori (Torre and Palace of the Kings of Lihory). Since 1992, the tower has belonged to the Alcalalí city council, which restored it and transformed it into a viewpoint that visitors can climb to enjoy the incredible panorama of the Vall de Pop. The tower's original five-story structure has been preserved, and the first and second floors now house a museum. On the third floor, you can admire engravings and graffiti from the 16th to 18th centuries, offering a glimpse into the customs and traditions of Alcalá's inhabitants during that period.
