Altenstein Castle

Highlight • Castle

The Altenstein Castle was built in 1736 as a residential castle on the foundations of the worn-out Altenstein Castle for the dukes of Meiningen. After numerous changes of ownership it served at the time of the GDR as Handwerkererholungsheim. It was included in the list of monuments in the 1970s and should be opened to visitors along with the garden. In 1982, the work resulted in a catastrophic fire in which the castle burned to the ground. Even before the turnaround began with improper renovations, which quickly came to a halt. After a long construction break, the castle has been renovated since 2010 and is to be restored to its original state. From the outside you can already visit the magnificent building and stroll through the extensive park.

When I reached the cliffs I could hardly believe what I was seeing. There they stood, towering, mighty and impressive, and it was as if the cycle path had forced its way right through these ancient rocks. On one side of the path the Werra, flowing calmly and serenely, and on the other side these huge cliffs that seemed almost alive in the morning sun.

It was an amazing sight and a bit like cycling through a huge open-air museum. The sun played with the light and shadow on the rocks and I couldn't help but keep stopping to enjoy the view. The cliffs seemed to tell stories from long ago and I felt like a small part of that long history.

The cycle path itself was a joy to ride. It was well maintained and took me through a landscape that seemed somehow magical. At times I was in the shadow of the cliffs, at times in the sunshine on the banks of the Werra. There was always something new to see and I enjoyed every minute of this ride.

Scharfenburg Keep (bergfried)

Highlight • Castle

Even though only ruins and the keep remain of the almost thousand-year-old hilltop castle, a visit to the observation tower is worth the climb. With a bit of luck, the visit will coincide with one of the cultural events there during mid-summer.

😎 In 2023 I rode along here with my brother on my first longer EBIKE TOUR from ESW to ESA. Then again the next day on the way back. What a fantastic picture. What a symphonic frog concert from the other bank of the Werra. What a wonderful cycle path between Hesse and Thuringia. The next time will be in 2024 on an e-bike tour with my partner from Eschwege-Niederhone through the beautiful Ringgau to Creuzburg and back to Eschwege. We enjoyed it. And I'm already looking forward to the next time. Sometime this year. 👋
