September 6, 2026, Kyle of Tongue Bridge

For over a century, there was talk of building a bridge here, but it didn't arrive until 1971. Before that, locals crossed the Kyle on a small passenger ferry, and when that disappeared, you had to take the narrow road that went all the way around the loch. Today it seems like just a road over the water, but in reality, you travel along a roadway of almost 4 km, partly supported by the small island of Eilean Thunga, until you reach the 183-meter bridge. For those of us who live surrounded by motorways, it might seem like a small thing; in this remote corner of the Highlands, that bridge completely changed the life and communications of the area.

A838 overpass over the Kyle of Tongue, built by combining a long embankment over the water with a bridge section that allows tidal flow. It connects the two banks of the estuary and avoids having to drive all the way around the Kyle of Tongue by road. From here there are very good views of the estuary, the mountains and the north Sutherland coast.

This was our last stop going north on our LEJOG trip. The best was kept until the last. This is a top quality hotel with top quality staff to boot. It offers a Highland setting located between Bettyhill and Tongue within the Borgie River Glen. The rooms are super comfortable, the food great, and it leaves you with a 100 km last day cycle ride if you are heading to JOG, otherwise it is a relatively short first day going south. I would highly recommend this place. Cycle friendly, and it has a lbike shed for your bikes.

The deli and coffee shop is also the village store and post office. It's a very important part of the community and worth stopping at because it's great and to help the local economy. Open Mon to Sat.

Traigh an t-Srathain is a narrow and deep bay with a nice sandy beach. It's the mouth of the Strath Melness which forms an interesting sand bar.
