Auschwitz Subcamp Althammer Memorial

Highlight • Historical Site

A sub-camp in Stara Kuźnia (German: Althammer) near Halemba (now a district of Ruda Śląska). The first prisoners were imprisoned there in the mid-19th century. September 1944. At the beginning of October there were approximately 500 people, mostly Jews from Poland, France and Hungary. They were housed in eight wooden barracks - previously inhabited by Italian prisoners of war - surrounded by a double barbed wire fence, the inner circle of which was electrified. The prisoners worked on the construction of the power plant: they dug foundations, drainage ditches, laid cables, etc. The camp manager was SS-Oberscharführer Hans Mirbeth. The SS men at the prisoners' workplaces were supported by older Wehrmacht and Kriegsmarine reservists and guards from the industrial guard. In total, at least 20 prisoners died in the camp, the number of those deported to Birkenau could not be determined. In January 1945, most of the camp's prisoners were evacuated on foot to Gliwice and then by train to other concentration camps.

St. Nicholas Church in Borowa Wieś

Highlight • Religious Site

The church was moved to its present location in the years 1937–1939, from nearby Przyszowice.
The date of the church's foundation cannot be clearly determined - church chronicles and some publications indicate the year of construction as 1640, others more generally date it to the 17th century. There are also opinions that the church was built in 1720, and even in 1737, although the latter date probably refers only to the year of the tower's construction.
The church was consecrated in its present place on December 16, 1939, but the parish was not established until December 20, 1957.
