December 27, 2024, Wards Ferry Road

Wards Ferry Road in Yosemite is a steep, narrow route known for its intense elevation gain and tight switchbacks. It’s a demanding ride that takes cyclists through scenic, remote areas of the foothills, offering panoramic views of the Tuolumne River, and surrounding canyons. The road’s challenging climb and rewarding descent make it a favorite for experienced cyclists looking for a tough workout in a less-crowded area.

As you cycle past the reservoir, you'll see two things: The 1930s dam holding it back, and the sparkling waters of the reservoir itself (which is primarily fed from the Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National Park). You might also spot the Moccasion Powerhouse at the east end of the reservoir; this is one of three hydroelectric plants serving San Francisco.

Super long winding climb (or descent). The Old Priest Grade is very steep and not good for fully loaded touring bikes. The New road is quieter too, as all the cars take the Old road.
