In the past, traders would travel from village to village and farm to farm with their baskets—the wooden, wicker, and leather baskets—to offer their (short) wares for sale. Along the way, they would also bring stories from near and far, as well as jokes, since radio and television didn't yet exist.

Werne is home to one of the oldest monasteries in the German Capuchin Province. For over 350 years, the Capuchin friars have lived and worked here in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. The people of the town have a close relationship with the monastery, which has developed over centuries. Currently, eight Capuchins live in Werne Monastery, and another three brothers are spending their final years in the St. Katharina nursing home and are assigned to the convent. The Capuchins serve as chaplains at their monastery church and, upon request, also assist with services and sacraments. They offer regular confession services and are happy to discuss questions of faith and life in personal conversation. They celebrate services in retirement homes, and one confrere serves as a permanent deacon in the parish ministry. https://www.kapuziner.org/werne/
