August 28, 2025, Bolyai Farkas and Bolyai János Monument

The monument in front of the Lyceum, created by Marton Izsák and István Csorvássy from Târgu Mureș, depicts father and son Bolyai. Farkas Bolyai (1775–1856) was a Hungarian mathematician from Marosvásárhely (Târgu Mureș) who studied under Carl Friedrich Gauss in Göttingen. Bolyai is considered the founder of mathematical research in Hungary. His son János Bolyai (1802–1860) was also a mathematician and military engineer. The "Copernicus of geometry" created the foundations of non-Euclidean geometry in 1831, which provided an indispensable foundation for 20th-century physical theories.

The Bolyai Farkas Theoretical Lyceum is a Hungarian-language secondary school. Founded in 1557, it was initially located in the Franciscan monastery next to the castle church. After being devastated by the armies of General Basta in 1601/1602, the institution moved to the site where the lyceum still stands today. Farkas Bolyai gave his inauguration speech here in May 1804, marking the beginning of the institute's heyday. He advocated for the modernization of education. The son of the famous mathematician, János Bolyai, also studied here. In 1957, on the 400th anniversary of its existence, the institution adopted the name Bolyai Farkas.

The Teleki-Bolyai Library was founded in 1802 by Count Sámuel Teleki, Chancellor of Transylvania, who was not only wealthy but also extremely well-educated, having studied at several European universities. He spent the majority of his fortune on the purchase of over 40,000 volumes and thus founded the public library that now bears his name. The library contains several early printed works, many rare manuscripts, and valuable museum pieces. In 1955, the Great Library of the Reformed College (Bolyai Library) moved into the Baroque building, and in 1962, the two collections were merged under the name Teleki-Bolyai Library.
