The church stands in a cemetery surrounded by a dry stone wall and forms a beautiful ensemble with the old rectory. Schwinkendorf was originally a free peasant village (only later a manorial estate). The mighty rectangular west tower made of brick was added in 1495 and gives the church an imposing, almost castle-like appearance. Curious: A free peasant donated it to the church, which was already around 250 years old at the time. According to legend, one could see as far as Rostock, about 75 km away, from the top of the tower.

The wider nave, constructed of brick, dates from the 15th century. The tower was simplified after a fire in 1766 and redesigned in the Neo-Gothic style in 1853.
