July 9, 2026, Braunauer Warte

The Braunauer Warte near the Braunau district of Bad Wildungen is a very well-preserved medieval watchtower that can be used as an observation tower today. It is freely accessible at any time of the year and stands on a hill 379 m above sea level. It was built around 1350 from rubble stones. Together with other towers, it belonged to the medieval border defense system of Wildungen and Fritzlar. The towers were observation points from which the tower crews could spot enemy troops in good time and communicate with each other using smoke signals. It offers a view of the Bad Wildungen region, the Kellerwald, Waldeck Castle, and the Dörnberg. The Braunauer Warte can be easily reached from Bad Zwesten via the circular hiking trails Z 2 and Z 3.

The Edersee is one of the largest dams in Germany. The namesake is the Fuldazufluss Eder, which comes from the Rothaargebirge from the west and fills the reservoir in the North Hessian Bergland near Korbach.

The cycle path is very pleasant to ride and leads directly along the lake or, when the water level is low, along the “cliff”.
