A small oasis in the middle of the forest. It did me a lot of good in the great heat.

The regulation of the Danube between Vienna and the March from 1870 onwards exacerbated the problems of the Marchfeld population, as the Danube deepened further. The groundwater level in the Marchfeld continued to drop and bodies of water dried up. Over-exploitation of the groundwater body and official restrictions on water abstraction due to excessively high nitrate levels worsened the problem situation in the course of the 20th century. The Marchfeld became the most intensively farmed region in Austria. Between 1986 and 2004, the Marchfeld canal system, almost 100 km in total length – consisting of artificial canals and adapted streams – was finally built, with the main channel being flooded as early as 1992.
