The path to the Kreuzkapelle leads through an avenue of lime trees planted around 1870. New plantings fill the gaps left by a storm in 2007. Between the trees of the avenue and around the chapel stand 14 stations of the cross, which were erected in the 18th century. Since 1962, they have been adorned with ceramic images by the Osnabrück artist Ruth Landmann. Beneath the depictions are texts from a Way of the Cross devotion from the 1958 Catholic Day in Berlin. The path to the chapel also passes the Lourdes grotto, which was built in 1911 on the initiative of the Hildesheim dentist Alexander Schreiber. The origins of the chapel and the Way of the Cross pilgrimage date back to around 1680. Legend has it that one evening a shepherd saw a large, glowing cross above the mountain. In those years, Ottbergen and its surroundings were threatened by the plague. In their distress, people made their way to the site of the vision and prayed for help. This established the tradition of the Ottberger pilgrimage.

The Blaubeerenberg is a well-hidden peak in the Hildesheim mountains 😉 We didn't see any blueberries. Are they also extinct like the caveberries 🐻? 😄
