From this point, you can safely observe the elephant seals on the beach. Their population has been increasing from hundreds to thousands in recent years, reducing their risk of extinction. They come to Año Nuevo Island and other beaches along the Californian and Mexican coasts to breed. This is a perfect spot to experience these magnificent animals up close in their natural habitat.

From this viewpoint, you get a good look at Año Nuevo Island. To your left, you can spot a cormorant colony nesting on a small, rocky peninsula. It's a great spot to have binoculars on hand for a closer view of the wildlife.

Año Nuevo State Park offers a variety of hiking experiences, with over 10 distinct routes recorded on komoot. These range from easy coastal walks to more challenging trails, catering to different fitness levels.
The park's trails feature diverse terrain, including coastal terrace prairie, wetland marshes, extensive dune fields, and coastal scrub. You'll also find ocean bluffs, beaches, and even sections extending into redwood forests, providing a rich variety of landscapes for your hike.
Yes, Año Nuevo State Park has several easy trails suitable for families. For instance, the Hiking loop from Año Nuevo Island is an easy 2.0-mile path offering coastal views. Many trails are moderate, but the park's unique wildlife viewing opportunities, especially the elephant seals, make it an engaging experience for all ages.
Año Nuevo State Park is renowned for its abundant wildlife. You can observe northern elephant seals, especially during breeding season. Other common sightings include otters, California sea lions, coyotes, various bird species, harbor seals, and Steller sea lions. The park is also home to the rare San Francisco Garter Snake and California Red-legged Frog.
Yes, permits are required for elephant seal viewing. During the breeding season (December 15 to March 31), viewing is typically via docent-led tours. From April 1 to November 30, self-guided walks with a free permit are available. It's advisable to check the official park website for the most current information regarding permits and access: parks.ca.gov/AnoNuevo/.
Hikers can explore several significant points of interest. The Elephant Seals Observation Point offers prime viewing opportunities. You can also reach Año Nuevo Point, a significant migratory route and birdwatching spot. The park also features the Elephant Seal Marine Discovery Center, which provides educational exhibits.
The best time depends on what you want to see. For elephant seal breeding activity, visit between December and March. For self-guided viewing and generally milder weather, April to November is excellent. Regardless of the season, be prepared for varied terrain, including sand dunes, and wear sturdy shoes.
Yes, there are several loop trails available. A popular option is the Año Nuevo Point loop — Año Nuevo Natural Preserve, which is 3.4 miles long and winds through coastal bluffs. Another easy loop is the Costanoa KOA Campground – Franklin Point Trailhead loop from Quiroste Valley Cultural Preserve, covering 4.3 miles through coastal plains.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.4 stars from over 29 reviews. Reviewers often praise the unique opportunity to observe abundant wildlife, especially the elephant seals, and the diverse coastal landscapes that make each hike memorable.
While the park is a fantastic place for outdoor activities, dogs are generally not permitted on the trails or beaches within the Natural Preserve, especially where wildlife is present, to protect the sensitive ecosystem and the elephant seal colony. It's best to check the official park regulations before bringing your dog.
Given the varied terrain, including sand dunes and coastal bluffs, sturdy, closed-toe shoes are highly recommended. Layers are also advisable, as coastal weather can change quickly, with fog, sun, and wind possible on the same day. Sun protection like hats and sunscreen is also important.
While the elephant seal viewing areas can be popular, exploring trails further from the main viewing points or visiting during off-peak hours (early mornings or weekdays) can offer a more tranquil experience. The Hiking loop from Coastways 1600 Dam is an easy 2.9-mile route that might offer a quieter alternative.
