June 20, 2023, Pfennigbrücke Celle

The Pfennig Bridge is a frequently used pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Aller. It connects the Blumlage/Altstadt district with the Hehlentor district. A bridge was first built here during the German Empire in 1900. The Pfennig Bridge was destroyed by floods several times. At that time, passers-by initially had to pay one pfennig and later two pfennigs bridge toll. Directly behind the Pfennigbrücke in the Hehlentor district is the Dammaschwiese, a recreation and leisure area. The Pfennig Bridge is also the destination point for the traditional “All Winter Torch Swimming” event, which has been organized by the German Life Saving Society in Celle every February since 1966.

This section of the cycle path is located between the former Osterloh weir and the village of Bockelskamp in the Flotwedel collective municipality. It's worth taking a break in the grass not only at the "new" renaturalized weir, but also here between the river and the cycle path! ATTENTION: This section is not accessible during floods!
