Jogging in Orfordness-Havergate National Nature Reserve offers routes through a distinctive landscape. The region is primarily characterized by Orford Ness, Europe's largest vegetated shingle spit, which features expansive shingle ridges and valleys. Behind the shingle bank, marshes and lagoons have developed, providing a contrasting landscape of saltmarsh, mudflats, and brackish lagoons. Havergate Island further enhances the reserve's natural appeal with its shallow, salty lagoons and varied habitats.

The conservation work was completed in 2024 and now the castle looks superb. Really recommend as very intact 12c building. Lovely town too and good walks in the area.

Two fab-looking old buildings on the seafront of Aldeburgh, I only walked by and did not stop. Love seeing these types of structure, not one part of them look straight, a DIY'ers nightmare.

Sizewell Beach, located on the stunning Suffolk coastline, is a wonderful place to refresh and refuel on your run. Cool off with a swim in the sea, relax on the grassy banks, or grab yourself a coffee or snack at the beach café.

One popular option is the South Beach, Aldeburgh – Aldeburgh loop from Aldeburgh, which is about 4 km long and takes around 25 minutes to complete. Access to Orford Ness is restricted, and dogs (except assistance dogs) are generally not permitted on the National Trust ferry or the reserve itself. Havergate Island also has strict wildlife protection policies. It's best to check specific access rules with the National Trust or RSPB before planning a run with your dog.
The reserve is an internationally important site for breeding and migrating birds, so you might spot exotic-looking spoonbills, elegant avocets, common terns, pintails, and marsh harriers. Beyond birds, the area is home to brown hares and Chinese water deer. Keep an eye out for various insects, including rare ground lackey moth caterpillars, especially in late summer when the salt marshes display a purple array of sea lavender.
Yes, many of the routes in the area are circular. For example, the Running loop from Aldeburgh is a moderate 6 km path that starts and ends in Aldeburgh. Another option is the challenging Aldeburgh to Sizewell running loop via Thorpeness — Suffolk Coast & Heaths, which is a 16.1 km circular trail.
Access to Orford Ness is exclusively via the National Trust ferry, Octavia, from Orford Quay. Tickets are limited and must be booked in advance. There is no access by foot or vehicle from Slaughden. Havergate Island is also accessed by boat, requiring a reasonable level of fitness for embarking and disembarking. Stout footwear is recommended due to potentially wet and uneven paths on both islands.
Yes, Orford Ness has a fascinating 20th-century military history. As you run, you can encounter the concrete shells of the 'Pagoda' laboratories, remnants of its past as an experimental over-the-horizon radar array and Atomic Weapons Research Establishment. Some trails also offer glimpses of a WWI airfield.
For access to Orford Ness, you would typically park in Orford village near Orford Quay, where the National Trust ferry departs. Parking options are available in the village, though it's advisable to check local signage for specific parking regulations and fees.
The reserve offers unique experiences throughout the year. Spring and autumn are excellent for birdwatching due to migration. Late summer is particularly beautiful when the salt marshes are covered in a purple display of sea lavender. Some trails on Orford Ness may be seasonally closed, so it's always a good idea to check with the National Trust for current access information before your visit.
While the nature reserve itself is quite remote, the nearby village of Orford, where the ferry to Orford Ness departs, offers amenities such as pubs and cafes. Similarly, Aldeburgh, which is the starting point for several running routes like the Running loop from Aldeburgh, has a selection of establishments including the Two Magpies Bakery and The White Hart Pub.
