The Rosenkranz-Rudbøl border crossing is probably one of the most beautiful of the Germany-Denmark border crossings. And one of the most unusual. Because here the border runs for a length of 130 meters in the middle of the road and then right through Ruttebüller Lake (Rudbøl Sjø).

The road that winds between the houses to the Rosenkranz-Rudbøl border crossing is narrow. This unusual border town is located near the west coast and near the Emil Nolde Foundation in Neukirchen. On the road, pedestrians are constantly looking for the embedded border markers. So you don't know exactly whether you are in Germany or Denmark, and the border runs partly between the houses in a westerly direction.

But why was the border drawn this way at the Rosenkranz-Rudbøl border crossing? One explanation describes the personal wish of the house owners on the western side to belong to Denmark. In fact, part of the border runs between the properties.

The other version says that the planned border should have run right through the Old German Border Krog and so it was agreed that the border should be in the middle of the road. The most likely scenario, however, is that the Ruttebüller See was to be allocated half to both countries in order to give the rush cutters and fishermen equal opportunities.
The western Koog, however, should definitely belong to Denmark and so it was agreed that the border between Denmark and Germany should run along the middle of the top of the dike towards the Koog. And this very top of the dike is the road.
The border itself is marked with buoys on the Ruttebüller See.

Højer Mill

Highlight • Monument

Højer Mill, dating from 1857, is both a museum and a well-preserved cultural environment on the edge of the marshland – a fantastic cultural landscape where the struggle against water has influenced and shaped people and buildings for centuries. Northern Europe's tallest Dutch windmill, with its storerooms, miller's dwelling, and atmospheric mill garden, tells the story of the mill's history and technology. Enjoy the impressive view of the Tønder Marsh and the Wadden Sea from the mill. A stroll in the mill garden and a refreshment in the café are also recommended.

Rickelsbüller Koog

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Rickelsbüller Koog lies between the Hindenburgdamm causeway and the Danish border in the far north of our region. On the Danish side, it borders the Margarethe Koog, separated by a wild boar fence that has been in place since the end of 2019 and has been the subject of much discussion.

The Rickelsbüller Koog covers almost 540 hectares and is the northernmost polder in Schleswig-Holstein.

The dike was only completed in 1982, and since then the polder has been completely disconnected from the saltwater. This has allowed diverse habitats to develop, primarily benefiting migratory and breeding wading birds and waterfowl.

Large flocks of birds can be observed here, especially in spring and autumn. They find a rich food supply from which to replenish their fat reserves for their long migration.

From autumn to spring, thousands of winter visitors arrive.

Besides barnacle geese, these include wigeons and dunlins.

The red knot, for example (a bird from the sandpiper family), is about

the size of a blackbird and almost doubles its weight while resting in the Rickelsbüller Koog.

With luck, you might also spot a white-tailed eagle here.

So it's always worth having binoculars with you.

The nature reserve can be circumnavigated on foot, a distance of almost 13 km. Unfortunately, this isn't possible by bicycle; you can only skirt its perimeter. There are several information panels along the way, and an information pavilion about the Wadden Sea National Park is located at the parking area. A birdwatching hide, which is hard to miss, can be found halfway along the route.

On a sunny day, you're never alone at the cliff. It's different in winter: there's plenty of space and time to appreciate the landscape, and you can easily imagine the history of the cliff.

The Rickelsbüller Koog is a nature reserve covering approximately 534 hectares in the North Frisian district – the northwesternmost point of mainland Germany lies there, directly on the border dam near Rodenäs-Markhäuser. Since its embankment in 1981 and official designation as a protected area in 1982, it offers a mosaic of wet meadows, reed beds, and inland waters that developed from the former mudflats and salt marshes. For birdwatchers, the Koog is a true paradise: it is one of the most important resting and breeding areas along the Schleswig-Holstein North Sea coast. Species such as pink-footed goose, barnacle goose, redshank, black-tailed godwit, dunlin, knot, and many more rest and breed here in large numbers. Particularly impressive are the now regular sightings of white-tailed eagles – a testament to the ecological importance of the area. The landscape is crisscrossed by easily accessible dikes and observation points, including an observation hut. Ideal for nature lovers: binoculars are a must to experience the vibrant birdlife in action. The circular trail – for example, part of the "WWF Tour – Boundless Birdlife" – runs approximately 13 km through the area, offering extensive experiences of the open landscape and the opportunity to experience the northernmost point of the mainland. The Koog is accessible via Rodenäs: By bike or car, you can reach a free parking area directly next to the dike via the border road. From there, paths lead into the protected area – the clear landscape, the rich birdlife, and the peacefully flowing border make the destination a special natural location.

The mill is located in the center of Højer and at the same time in the heart of the Tønder Marsh, the northernmost part of a large, man-made marshland that extends south into northern Germany and the Netherlands. In the two old granaries, Lille and Stone Spiker, exhibitions and other informational offerings showcase the marsh's origins. You can also learn more about land drainage, dikes, locks, dikes, etc. – and, last but not least, about the unique nature and birdlife of the marshland. The mill itself dates back to 1857. Together with the granaries, the house, and the garden, it forms a well-preserved cultural asset that is part of the Museum Sønderjylland. Højer Mill also has a café.

The Morsum Cliff on Sylt is not only geologically and scenically impressive, but also an important habitat for sand martins. These birds nest in the steep cliff walls and are a special highlight for bird watchers. The sand martins dig their nesting holes in the soft sand and clay walls of the cliff, which offers them protection and ideal conditions for raising their young. A walk along the Morsum Cliff not only offers the opportunity to observe these fascinating birds, but also a deep insight into the diverse flora and fauna of the area. The circular path begins at the Nösistich car park and leads along the cliff, where numerous information boards provide information about the geology and the animal world. Especially in spring and summer, visitors can watch the sand martins performing their daring flight maneuvers and building their nests. The cliff itself consists of various rock layers that are up to ten million years old. This unique geology makes the area one of the oldest and most important nature reserves in Schleswig-Holstein. In addition to the sand martins, you can also find rare plant species such as the lungwort and the spotted orchid, which support the ecological balance of the cliff.
